Kathleen Armour BEd(Hons) MA PhD
Biography
Kathy's photoKathleen Armour is Professor of Physical Education & Sport Pedagogy in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences. After completing her first degree at Nonington College of Physical Education, Kathy taught for 6 years in secondary and primary schools, in both the state and independent sectors. In 1985 she joined Brunel University (West London Institute). Between 1985 and 1995, Kathy completed a part-time Masters Degree in Curriculum Studies at London University, Institute of Education (1986), gained a PhD from Southampton University (1993), and had three children. Kathy returned to full-time employment at Brunel in 1996, and joined Loughborough University in September 1999.

Teaching Interests
Kathy's main area of interest is in pedagogy and there are strong and natural links between her teaching and research. During her time as Programme Leader for the M.Sc. in Physical Education, Kathy designed a flexible learning programme to support the Continuing Professional Development of physical education teachers and coaches. A range of study modes is now available, including intensive weekend modules, and the programme attracts both home and international students.

Research Interests
Building upon her earlier research into teachers' lives and careers, Kathy's research is now focussed on teachers' and coaches' Continuing Professional Development (CPD). She is examining the ways in which teachers can and do learn throughout their careers, and the links between teachers' and pupils' learning. Emerging from this research is an analysis of the ways in which teachers identify key learning outcomes for physical education programmes and related questions of accountability. As an example, pupils' personal/social development has been identified by PE teachers as an important learning outcome, yet both research evidence and CPD are lacking in this field. As a result, Kathy is engaged in a number of evaluation projects examining the impact of physical activity on personal/social development, particularly for young people who are disaffected or disengaged from education. Kathy's research uses a wide range of research methods and draws upon sociological and educational theory.
