The International Monetary Fund has ratcheted up the pressure on crisis-hit Greece after its managing director, Christine Lagarde,
said she has more sympathy for children deprived of decent schooling in
sub-Saharan Africa than for many of those facing poverty in Athens.
In an uncompromising interview with the Guardian, Lagarde insists it is payback time for Greece and makes it clear that the IMF has no intention of softening the terms of the country's austerity package...

As I have said many times before, I am very sympathetic to the Greek people and the challenges they are facing. That's why the IMF is supporting Greece in its endeavor to overcome the current crisis and return to the path of economic growth, jobs and stability. An important part of this effort is that everyone should carry their fair share of the burden, especially the most privileged and especially in terms of paying their taxes. That is the point I was emphasizing when I spoke to the Guardian newspaper as part of a broader interview some time ago.
Όπως έχω πει πολλές φορές, είμαι πολύ συμπαθητική του ελληνικού λαού και των προκλήσεων που αντιμετωπίζουν. Για το λόγο αυτό το ΔΝΤ υποστηρίζει την Ελλάδα με το εγχείρημα να ξεπεράσει τη σημερινή κρίση και να επιστρέψετε στη διαδρομή του οικονομική ανάπτυξη, απασχόληση και τη σταθερότητα. Ένα σημαντικό μέρος της προσπάθειας αυτής είναι ότι όλοι θα πρέπει να φέρει τους δίκαιο μερίδιο των βαρών, ιδιαίτερα τα πιο προνομιούχο και ιδιαίτερα από την άποψη της πληρώνουν τους φόρους.
